Nuts and bolts
Alas, not everything is easy on Islesford.
Here are some very important rules and regulations:
Here are some very important rules and regulations:
Arrival
For weekly rentals, arrival time at Red Roof is 3:00 pm on Sunday and check-out is 10:00 am on Saturday. Please get in touch to see if alternative arrangements may be made.
Trash disposal
The town transfer station accepts cardboard, aluminum cans, plastics, paper, books/magazines, tin and small metal, as well as everyday household trash. All trash must be disposed of in clear plastic garbage bags.
ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD may be disposed of at the transfer station. While it sounds a little unpleasant, food scraps (egg shells, coffee grounds, etc.) can be taken to the shore, where gulls are very happy to oblige. Just keep the tide in mind when bringing organic waste to the shore.
Visit the town's transfer station page for hours of operation and other details.
Water, dishes, and laundry
Water usage is an ongoing concern at Red Roof. When we have adequate rain in the spring and summer, our well can accommodate a full summer's worth of use. We share the well with two neighboring homes - Red Roof is part of a small family compound. If the weather is dry, the wells can get low in August and September.
We ask that you always be mindful of your water use:
Bathroom taps need to be turned tightly to prevent drips
Do laundry sparingly
Get good and clean, but long, hot showers should be kept to a minimum
Avoid running the water too much during dishwashing
THANK YOU!!
Fire safety and emergency services
Red Roof is an vintage wood cabin. Please be more than careful when using the fireplace. There's nothing like the smell , sound, and coziness of a wood fire, but just be super cautious, please.
Never leave the fire unattended.
In the event of an emergency, call 911 and specify the house you are in: Houghton's Red Roof.
Cleaning and departure
We hope that you will leave Red Roof as you found it: Beds made, linens washed, the house clean and tidy. If you prefer not to spend your last hours on Islesford vacuuming and making beds, there are people on the island who you can hire to clean for you.
