The house

Red Roof was built in 1934 and has remained largely unchanged over the years.

There are plain pine walls, old beams over head, a big screen door that has welcomed generations of families with children, friends, and dogs. There are jigsaw puzzles, books, cards, board games, and an AM/FM radio.

What there are not: TV, microwave, dishwasher, or technology of any kind. Cell coverage depends on your carrier. The number for the land line is 207-244-5208. There is Internet access at the Islesford Library, a short walk down the road.

A large main room is the centerpiece of Red Roof. From the seating area at the picture window, sip coffee or a cocktail as you watch lobster men hauling traps, elegant yachts sailing by, seabirds and eagles soaring. The view of the sun setting over the hills of Mt. Desert Island is simply spectacular.
